This a play about human need, brought into focus by the death of Nick, a teenage boy with a passion for reggae which he has shared with the boy next door, seventeen-year-old Dan. What are the repercussions of that loss on the boy's family: mother Marion, father Graham and sister Louise, and on Dan, who idolised Nick and now becomes besotted with his mother?
Dan says he likes reggae because 'it's how you feel without any of the rubbish that gets in the way,' and it is exactly that directness that makes me like this play. Vinnicombe's writing cuts to the heart of things and from comparison with the published script director Duncan Macmillan has pared away even more. It is tightly written and tightly played with such reality that it can even dispense with dialogue as we sit listening with the characters to a Toots Hibbert reggae record. Not that this gets a 'realistic' production.

Very good: A book that does not look new and has been read but is in excellent condition. Published as a programme text for the world premiere at the Finborough Theatre in October , Cradle Me is a tender, powerful play about the aftermath of a family tragedy. Following an unspeakable yet avoidable tragedy, a family finds themselves torn apart by grief and turning for comfort to Daniel, the troubled teenage boy who lives next door. Having experienced their tragedy first hand, Daniel shares in their grief in a way that creates an individual bond with each member of the family.
Louise is the prepubescent daughter whose burgeoning sexuality makes Daniel an obvious target for her affections. Graham is the grieving father who recognises Daniel as kwing his dead son in a way that he never could and w never will. We go to the same restaurants and order the same dishes and have the same conversations as we eat those same dishes.
Luke would prefer any conversation to this one, it is clear. He remains adamant in his aversion to children. This issue has long since been settled, as far as Luke is concerned. Although she hardly looks old enough to play an actress facing career oblivion and hearing the clock ticking from every pore, Ms. Dizzia gives a movingly nuanced performance as Claire implores, wheedles, cajoles and finally simply lays bare the raw hunger she feels for a child.

That revelatory monologue strikes a slightly stagy note in this naturalistic play, but Ms. Dizzia delivers it with a quiet matter-of-factness that gives us a piercing glimpse of the soul scars that have formed over this old wound.

Instead I have a mediocre reel documenting how pretty I used to be. The character of Luke is less sympathetic and more two dimensional, unfortunately; his resistance to fatherhood is dispatched with a casual reference to an unhappy childhood. Sleep deprived and ravaged by irritability, Annie and Nate, a corporate recruiter and a mostly out-of-work actor, have decided that tonight is the night their almostyear-old will have to face down her existential fears without coddling from Mom and Dad at every sign of discomfort.
Trivial though it may seem, the subject clearly touches a nerve: a similarly themed picture book with an unprintable title hit No.
About Cradle Me
Annie and Nate take turns lacerating themselves and each other over the wanton cruelty they feel they are inflicting on their adored little girl. But they also know the equilibrium of their marriage is being threatened by the ravages of sleeplessness.
