The opinions express are my own. Jan 23, Gina Hott rated it really liked it Shelves: galley-arc , christian , paperback. After all those kids and 30 years of marriage he just up and walks out saying he's going to visit relatives? I think not! Anyway, it was a good story and I ended up liking him in the end - though I still thought they were too easy on him. This was such a sweet book but you could feel the secrets and anger.

It's a reminder that we must forgive to move on -- and that we're not always angry at the person we're taking it out on This particular novella was set in Paradise which is only a bit up the road so it felt like home. I really enjoyed this because it felt so real. Real issues.

Real relationships. Real struggles. It wasn't the feel good tripe painting them without personalities that I've found in some. It was really well written and a terrific way to spend a couple of hours. Jan 24, Heather rated it it was amazing.

This book was an amazing way to showcase the faith of an Amish person. The love and faith encompassed in the families is something that one may only dream about. It makes me wonder what it would be like to have a community and family that loves without fear and offers forgiveness without fail. Jan 15, Kelly rated it really liked it.

I think these authors had more in mind than writing some nice little love stories. Packed in the stories are valuable truths about what it means when Jesus is Lord of our lives. Dec 06, Lori rated it it was amazing. Another great book to read or listen to. There were 3 great books in this novel to enjoy! I really enjoy reading about the Amish culture. This is nice. I love it. I like t he concept of multiple storiesin one instead of having to uy separate books. Jul 01, Cherese Akhavein rated it it was amazing. Naaman Lapp left home a year ago to go to his cousins in Ohio, now he is home and hie wife Levina is trying to come to terms with him leaving and where they stand now, they were empty nesters and lost what they had when they wer first married.

Can they find there way back to each other? Can Levina forgive Naaman for leaving her and their family? Can he forgive himself, when he still does not even know for sure why he left in the first place. This was a very good short story of understanding, forgiveness and coming to terms with the life you had as parents and the life you will have as married partners who spent yerars together but not necessarily together since you spent those years raising your children. I very much enjoyed this story and believe you will as well.

Series: Healing Hearts

Beth Wiseman did a wonderful job. The second story is A Marriage of the Heart by Kelly Long Abigail Kauffman wants nothing more than to escape the life she has with her father, since her mother died it's been just her and her father and she longs for a better life. Joseph Lambert is seeking a new life back into the community, after Abigail and Joseph suddenly find themself married to each other they slowly start to understand what true love and long understanding of that love and life means.

This story is a look at what a parent will do to protect a child and then what that child will do to cherish a parent once the truth is revealed. It's a story of coming to understand oneself through the mistakes you have made and growing in the process. You don't want to miss reading this Kelly Long story, it's very good. The third story is: What the Heart sees by Kathleen Fuller: Ellie Chupp struggles with nightmares still after five years after the terrible accident that took the life of her best friend in the car accident and left her blind, will she ever be able to have a good night sleep.

She has long since forgave her cousin Isaiah who was driving and her life is wonderful.

Healing Hearts A Collection of Amish Romances

She has her own little business selling jam and jellies, she gets around just fine with her cane, and she even manages to cook and run the house with little help, so why now after five years have the nightmares returned? Christopher Miller has come home after five years, not sure why other than his mothers letters pleaded with him, truth be told he missed his family but now that he is back the memories flood him and so does his anger for his once friend Isaiah who killed is beloved Caroline.

And when he finds out his sister is to marry Isaish it's almost to much. Can he come to terms with the accident that changed everything, can Ellie help Chirs or will Chris help Ellie? I sure you will be as intreging with this story as I was, it forces you to step out of your comfort zone and look at what will happen if suddenly your life changes and you have to rely on your strength to carry you through. Also it looks at fogiving others for what you can't change.

Realizing that even though you are hurting others in that situation are as well and we must look at the whole situation as a whole. This was a wonderful story and you don't want to miss reading this Kathleen Fuller Story. Feb 10, Heather Bridson rated it really liked it. I loved this book, it has three stories all from the same Amish community, sharing some of the same characters. Each is a wonderful love story, with the second one being my favorite.

Just perfect stories to read all curled up at night. Makes me miss romance. Anyway, the stories are well written and the characters are great! Great read. Yet another great find at the local thrift store! Oct 24, Mary Beth rated it really liked it. When Ellie Chupp loses her sight in an accident--and then her boyfriend shortly after that--she believes love will never be in her future. This is a nice collection. I enjoyed the exposure to authors that are fairly new to me and it propelled me to also read each of their collections that contains these stories.

God puts us where he needs us. It's not always easy to understand why things happen in our lives. Bit confusing that the three stories in this anthology aren't in the order they're listed on the back cover.

A little annoying that the authors of each story aren't listed on the contents page either. Or that in one of the story descriptions, they got a characters name wrong.

See a Problem?

That's why it took me quite a while to realize just which story the book actually started with! A note before you start reading. The Amish speak Pennsylvania Deitsch. It's not strictly German, as it's changed over the years Bit confusing that the three stories in this anthology aren't in the order they're listed on the back cover.

It's not strictly German, as it's changed over the years while they've been in America.

An Amish Love by Beth Wiseman

Think of it as a mix between German and English. Also all three stories take place in the same Amish community and several characters from different stories occassionally cross paths like in town at Yoder's Pantry. When handsome Joseph Lambert comes back from the Englisch, she lies to force a marriage of convenience, providing the perfect means to escape her father's rule. But Rachel never imagined she'd fall in love with Joseph so quickly or irrevocably. I liked this story although hated that the marriage started with deception.

Felt really strange that a young Amish woman wouldn't know how to do anything around the kitchen or house. They explain why, but it still doesn't make sense. Think about it Liked the romance story though. Bone to pick here though, in the book description quoted above But they find love and forgiveness in a place they least expect. This was a very lovely story. It does have a romance in it, but it's mostly a story about forgiveness. However, I have a problem with the story, in how the author got it wrong. This book is about an amish family and how someone who is shunned is finding his way back home.

My understanding of how the amish treat the shunned person, the meiding, even if they are family is that they are to turn their back to them, and are not allowed to touch them, or even talk to them. They also are not allowed to sit at the same table with them. This would make helping the shunned person come back to god and forgiveness difficult, to say the least, so I can understand why she ignored the Ordnung rules for her story.

However, by doing so, she misrepresents the correct Amish way of life. For that reason, I have to downgrade this to 3 stars. She could easily have set the story somewhere else, without violating the Ordnung rules, pehaps even a Mennonite story. When Naaman left to visit cousins in Ohio, Levina wasn't expecting him to be gone a year.

Now that he's back, will they be able to move beyond this estrangement and fall in love again? Something bugs me about this story. Amish are plain people. They don't even use buttons, but hooks and eyes instead. They don't drive cars but use buggy's. The one big difference between Amish and the Mennonites is that the Mennonites embrace electricity whereas the Amish refuse to use it. They use oil lamps instead, for instance. So how can Levina Lapp have a refrigerator and a freezer if the Amish don't use electricity? Just saying. Now, in Chapter Ten, Freda is sewing buttons on a shirt she made for Jake.

Buttons is a stretch, but electricity is a big no-no for Amish. All these mistakes ruin the story, at least to me, because they are such obvious errors. Different Amish groups in different areas of the country have differing traditions, so perhaps some now use buttons. I know some have phones in the barn, etc. The story itself wasn't bad, but I just found it odd that after 30 years a man would up and leave his family for no apparant reason and that when he did come home, his wife forgave him so easily.

From a glance at the front cover and the synopsis of this collection, one can be forgiven for assuming that this is a light, predictable selection of stories about the Amish. So I was pleasantly surprised to see that each author was bringing something new and original to the genre.

Kelly Long, whose debut novel I absolutely adored, places her protagonist, Abby Kauffman, in an unusual situation and shows us how love can blossom in the most unexpected places. After a newcomer to the community, Joseph Lambert, fails to give Abby the attention she believes she deserves, she accuses him of misbehaving with her. But the joke is on her when her father forces them into a marriage of convenience in order to protect her honour — and much to her shock, Joseph agrees to this arrangement!
