There is magic in these pages. He has also written with great insight about the intense-felt character of religious perception.

And he has—dare I say it? The stories reflect a love of baseball and call upon us all to live slow and notice , illustrating the availability of a joyful, spiritual life. He has pitched a perfect game!

Further, the first of two appendices provides a very helpful reading list, including books, articles, and poems that Sexton himself has used in his course over the years. For fans like myself who grew up with the game, the association of baseball with religion and religious experience seems perfectly natural.

In this respect, Baseball as a Road to God strikes a very deep personal chord — and will do so with many fans. Indeed, I am at least affectively if not intellectually sympathetic to much of what Sexton has to say.

But he goes further than to merely claim that baseball and religion bear certain similarities to each other. Baseball is defined by wonder and amazement. This statement alone may raise red flags for some philosophical readers.

To be sure, Sexton is careful to note that baseball may not lead to a hierophany for all people, let alone for all baseball fans. While claims like this are found in many mystical traditions, it is neither clear that the kinds of experiences Sexton describes! But that by no means entails that their objects are unknowable, nor that they themselves are not expressible.

Seeing Beyond the Game

It reveals itself, albeit in experience rather than discursive discourse. But such is the nature of much of our ordinary knowledge by acquaintance. Often faith is understood as simply believing in ways that outstrip or outright contradict the force of the evidence — as were I to believe that the Brewers will win the pennant next year.

This Sexton rightly denies though he often reverts to speaking of it in this way.
